What would childhood be without memories of catching fireflies in the yard after dark on a humid summer night? Nothing says summer is here quite like my boys running through the back door announcing: “Mom the fireflies are out tonight!” This is a great activity and while you may think it is a bit silly or childish… you are EXACTLY right, it is! Our kids need to do simple, silly, childish things during the short window of childhood. These simple joys help build a strong foundation for their long term life success. How fun it is to run around the yard outside after dinner when the heat has been replacedby the cooler night air, the sun is down and the moon is out. It is magic.
According to my kids this is a fun activity because: lightning bugs are easy to catch, they are cool to watch, they don’t bite and you can easily catch them and put them in a jar hotel (unlike some other things like fish who are harder to catch). A tip from my 9 year old boys: once you get them in your hands, have your brother hold the jar over your hands with the opening facing down because they will fly up. They catch as many as they want, we watch them for about an hour then we set them free.
Mom, resist turning on the TV after dinner tonight; find a few empty jars and don’t let your children miss this firefly stage. You will never get it back. It is fun and they will store the happy memory to be retrieved later… the way you remembered your childhood summer firefly nights and smiled when you saw this post : )
