The gift of art is a perfect gift for all ages. All children are explorers and art provides that necessary world where they can color outside the lines and discover new ideas, create their own world where right or wrong doesn’t exist, see that problems have more than one solution, and allow their imagination to flourish, leaving their unique mark on the world.
Your child isn’t an artist? Think again:
- Everyone is an artist with the right tools. The human brain is very creative and it is creativity that allows all the parts of the brain work well together. Exploring art will allow your child to experience success in other areas of his world.
- Quiet space is needed for creativity to be born, but our kids don’t like that uncomfortable solitude needed for the brain to begin creating. They prefer the screen where the fight/ flight mode of their limbic system is activated looking to put out the next fire. Technology interruptions keep all of us from finding chunks of time needed for creative juices to begin to flow.
- Time and patience is needed for creativity to begin. TV and video games are a complacent safe place where the sparks of original ideas can be squelched. It is hard to create when you want to get back to your show or game.
- Confidence is needed. When your child is on a game he is experiencing another persons’ art and creativity, not his own (even in Minecraft). He needs to experience what it is like to create something with his own hands, not piggyback on what someone else has created.
Try different mediums until you find one that he/she enjoys. There are so many to choose from. We didn’t think we had an artist till he discovered clay one day, you just never know! You have an artist in your house too!
